VHI Nav/Tac HUD

ImageThe VHI Nav/Tac HUD is a dual-mode HUD attachment for use in both navigational and tactical situations. Designed after nav/tac systems in other flight sims, this unit is designed to provide easy navigation and advanced situational awareness. It can also function as a jetpack while not using a vehicle.

Currently, the Nav/Tac HUD is included with all vehicles manufactured in 2006 and later (for example, the Accipiter VTOL jet and the Archduke twin-prop.) An older version, called the Flight Computer, is included with the G-1 Cygnus II gyrocopter. The new HUD can be used with the Cygnus II - updates from the old version are free on request, and the new HUD's auto-update system will take care of updates from then on.

ImageGeneral Features

  • HUD attachment
  • Modes: Navigation, Tactical, Idle
  • Background can be translucent or opaque
  • Full touch menu system
  • Flight Assist (optional) for high-speed flight while not in vehicles
  • Can retrieve flight plans from participating GIS Servers, and even simple e-mail autoresponders, using an open protocol (note: VHI does not operate any at this time)

Visual Instrument Cluster
  • Pitch/Roll Tape shows aircraft orientation
  • Vertical Deviation Indicator (VDI) shows the vertical angle between you and your destination or target
  • Bearing needles show the horizontal direction to your destination or target
  • AOA gauge (works with vehicles using VVDE 4 and up)

Navigation Features
  • Main waypoints list stored in notecard (supports over 100 entries depending on size)
  • Support for loading and saving waypoints, creating a new waypoint at any arbitrary location (as long as it's in a named simulator), creating a new waypoint where you are presently, printing a list of waypoints (either easy to read or full-fledged so that it can be pasted to the notecard for permanent storage), deletion of waypoints, and resetting of the navigation cache
  • You can enter a flight plan as a series of waypoints, or load one remotely (assuming a GIS server or autoresponder is available)
  • VDI shows vertical angle to target
  • Teal bearing needle shows horizontal direction to target

Tactical Features
  • Can select a target from a list of avatars in range (max 16), or lock any target automatically, or lock the fastest target automatically
  • Displays clock bearing, coarse relative altitude, and coarse speed (e.g. 1:00, LOW, STILL); also displays target's speed, distance, and relative altitude (e.g. DOWN 33M)
  • VDI shows vertical angle to target and changes color according to speed
  • Red bearing needle shows horizontal direction to target

Caveats
  • Pitch/Roll Tape doesn't work right while using a vehicle in mouselook, except on vehicles using VVDE 4 and up
  • The GIS query protocol is open (full spec and reference implementation available on request) but VHI does not presently operate a GIS server.
